What is Photoaging?

Chronic ultraviolet radiation (UV) exposure from natural light sources, like the sun and artificial light sources, causes photoaging or the skin's premature aging. Repeated and unprotected exposure to UV rays damages the skin at the cellular level and causes hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, more prominent vasculature, and other structural changes.

What are the Signs of Photoaging?

  • Cutaneous malignancies
  • Dyspigmentation
  • Forehead lines
  • Pre-cancerous red and scaly spots (actinic keratoses)
  • Skin becomes leathery, and laxity occurs
  • Spider veins, or telangiectasias, which are damaged blood vessels on the skin's surface
  • Solar lentigines (also called age spots or liver spots)
  • Wrinkle formation

How to Prevent Photoaging?

Be mindful and limit your exposure to UV rays:

  • Avoid spending too much time in the sun, especially during the mid hours of the day (11 AM - 3 PM)
  • Wear sunscreen daily (minimum SPF 30)
  • Wear clothing to protect the skin
  • Avoid indoor tanning
