What Conditions Can CO2 Lasers Treat?

One of the most remarkable aspects of the CO2 laser is its versatility in addressing a multitude of skin conditions. Whether you're grappling with stubborn wrinkles, uneven skin texture, brown spots, or pesky acne scars, fractional CO2 laser treatments offer a comprehensive solution tailored to your unique needs.

The CO2 laser can effectively target pigmentation issues, such as age spots and sun spots, while improving overall skin tone and clarity. Furthermore, certain types of skin lesions and growths can be safely and efficiently treated with fractional CO2 laser therapy, providing relief and peace of mind for those affected by such conditions. Even oil glands and large pores, which can frequently appear on the nose, can be selectively reduced in size and activity.

The CO2 Laser Treatment Process

Before your CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment, you should avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least four weeks. If you must go under the sun, please try to cover the affected area with a hat or other piece of protective clothing or wear a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen. We also ask that you refrain from any chemical peel treatments in the month before your appointment.

First, our providers will start by numbing your skin, whether that be through medical-grade topicals or injections. This initial step greatly reduces the pain and discomfort during the treatment. The provider will go over the target area with the CO2 laser, thus creating miniscule holes in the skin surface—a form of controlled injury that eliminates the damaged skin while stimulating new collagen growth.

Navigating Recovery from CO2 Laser Treatment

While there is a recovery period, extent and duration vary depending on the intensity of treatment and your own skin sensitivity. Some side effects can include swelling, and soreness, which can be treated with Advil or Tylenol and typically disappear after two weeks. Notably, persistent redness can last a couple months. However, since this a nonsurgical procedure, there is minimal downtime before your body heals and you experience total skin rejuvenation.

Much like before treatment, you should avoid sun exposure during the recovery process, staying inside as much as possible. We also advise patients to refrain from strenuous physical activity, applying make-up or harsh chemical products, and picking at the treatment area. Additional care for the area may include vinegar soaks and usage of lightening cream to prevent hyperpigmentation, especially in darker skin types.

After the initial healing phase, patients are free to enjoy the remarkable transformation and skin tightening. As the skin continues to repair itself, visible improvements in textural irregularities, tone, and overall appearance become increasingly apparent. Fine lines and wrinkles are softened, acne scars are smoothed, and sun-damaged skin appears revitalized, giving way to a luminous renewed complexion.
