Contracture scars form when the skin receives either a second or third-degree burn. In a contracture scar, the skin tightens and inhibits mobility. More severe contracture scars may affect the muscles and nerves below the skin.
Dr. Hazany offers expert contracture scar treatment in Los Angeles. Burn scar contractures do not go away on their own. However, mobility may improve over time with occupational therapy, physical therapy, or splinting therapy. There are also over the counter treatments that can be used to help scar maturation such as silicone gel treatments. Contracture scars that persist can be treated surgically. Some procedures include local skin flaps (z-plasty) or skin grafts. Carbon dioxide laser therapy is now also used to loosen the skin surrounding a contracture scar.
