What is Photoaging?

Chronic ultraviolet radiation (UV) exposure from natural light sources, like the sun and artificial light sources, causes photoaging or the skin's premature aging. Repeated and unprotected exposure to UV rays damages the skin at the cellular level and causes dyspigmentation, wrinkles, more prominent vasculature, and other structural changes.

What are the Signs of Photoaging?

  • Cutaneous malignancies
  • Dyspigmentation
  • Forehead lines
  • Pre-cancerous red and scaly spots (actinic keratoses)
  • Skin becomes leathery, and laxity occurs
  • Spider veins, or telangiectasias, which are damaged blood vessels on the skin's surface
  • Solar lentigines (also called age spots or liver spots)
  • Wrinkle formation

How to Prevent Photoaging?

Be mindful and limit your exposure to UV rays:

  • Avoid spending too much time in the sun, especially during the mid hours of the day (11 AM - 3 PM)
  • Wear sunscreen daily (minimum SPF 30)
  • Wear clothing to protect the skin
  • Avoid indoor tanning

Photoaging Treatment in Los Angeles

Dr. Hazany is a specialist in photoaging treatment in his Beverly Hills dermatology clinic. Because the sun-exposure associated with photoaging presents a risk for developing skin cancer, a board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Hazany must confirm that pigment discoloration and other photoaging symptoms are not cancerous. Once Dr. Hazany rules out skin cancer, he devises a bespoke treatment plan to help you overcome photoaging with the most advanced dermatologic techniques: cosmetic injections, chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser treatment, and topical creams.
