What is Hair Loss?

Normally, the scalp sheds between 25 to 100 hairs each day.Hair loss disorders develop when this rate increases and baldareas form.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss and baldness can have various causes. Some causes that are common among different types of hair loss include aging, burns, diet deficiencies, excess vitamin A levels, a family history of baldness, hormonal fluctuations, illness, and scalp infections or inflammation. Common misconceptions about the causes of hair loss include dandruff, frequent hat-waring, and insufficient scalp circulation; there is no scientific evidence behind such claims.

What are the Different Types of Hair Loss?

type 1

Alopecia (Alopecia Areata)

Comedonal acne develops when excess oil, dead skin, and debris clogs your pores. Comedonal acne is a light or mild form of acne that is either open (i.e., a blackhead) or closed by a thin layer of skin (i.e., a whitehead). Blackheads typically have a darker appearance due to oxygen exposure. Topical spot treatments are effective for comedonal acne. However, comedonal acne that penetrates the skin more deeply might require extraction or another minimally invasive treatment.

Female-Pattern Baldness

While less common than male-pattern baldness, female-pattern baldness is characterized by hair thinning all over the scalp, but the hairline remains relatively unchanged. This type of baldness typically does not result in complete hair loss.

type 3

Male-Pattern Baldness

Male-pattern baldness is typically hereditary. This type of baldness does not have a particular onset age, but it typically begins after puberty. It is characterized by hair loss on the front, sides, and the crown of the head. While some men merely develop a receding hairline or bald spot, others can completely lose their hair.

Toxic Alopecia

Temporary hair loss characterizes this condition. Also called telogen effluvium hair loss, toxic alopecia may occur after a high fever or severe illness. Medications such as thallium, vitamin A, retinoids, and some cancer medications may cause toxic alopecia. Thyroid disease and childbirth may also cause toxic alopecia.

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder characterized by compulsive hair-pulling that often results in bald spots. Hair loss that results from trichotillomania might require psychological or psychiatric intervention for proper treatment.
