Acne scarring is the permanent indentations and texture changes in the skin that results from active acne. Acne “scarring” does not refer to the temporary brown and red marks that appear during the early stages of acne healing. Acne scarring refers to the more permanent skin changes that result from severe active acne.
Large pus-filled growths, or cysts, that develop in the skin’s pores damage healthy skin tissue. When this damage does not result in normal skin regeneration during the healing process, acne scars remain. Acne scarring is most common on the face, chest, and back. In some cases, scar tissue overproduction creates lumpy, uneven scars called “hypertrophic” or “keloid” scars.
There are many different types of acne scarring. Each type of acne scarring and its location require a different treatment approach for optimal acne scarring removal.
